Bug Description

This bug is present for me in both X11 and Wayland sessions.

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -> About Ubuntu

Description: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
Release: 22.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname' or by checking in Software Center

mutter:
  Installed: 42.0-3ubuntu2
  Candidate: 42.0-3ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 42.0-3ubuntu2 500
        500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy/universe amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) What you expected to happen

When beginning a selection on the desktop with the mouse (by beginning a drag on the wallpaper and not on the dock, icons, etc.), I expect its rectangle to instantly be visible once it has a non-zero width and height.

4) What happened instead

What I expect only happens if I begin the selection more than the width of the dock to the right of the right edge of the dock (my dock is positioned on the left) as shown below ('x' marks the beginning of the selection):

+-------+-------+---------------...
| Dock | Same |
| | width | x
| | as |
| | dock |

However, if I begin the selection in the 'Same width as dock' region, the selection rectangle is only visible when my mouse moves to the right of the 'Same width as dock' region. Moving it back in hides the rectangle again. A screen recording of this behaviour is attached to this bug report. Also, if I begin the selection in the 'Same width as dock' region and drag towards a display to the left of the display where the selection began, the selection rectangle is only visible on the display to the left while remaining invisible on the original display.

This bug was fixed in the package gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons-ng - 46+really47-1

---------------
gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons-ng (46+really47-1) unstable; urgency=medium

  * New upstream release (LP: #1998084)
    - Add keyboard navigation to desktop icons (LP: #1855711)
    - Fix rubberband with margins like top bar or dock (LP: #1971055)
  * Use debian/watch to mangle the upstream version to lessen version skew
if this extension is merged into gnome-shell-extensions later
  * Drop desktopGrid and metadata patches: applied in new release
  * Depend on gir1.2-gnomeautoar-0.1 instead of file-roller & xdg-desktop-portal
    (Closes: #1010810)
