Bug Description

Removing debian-installer from groovy

Currently lp copies up publications, even if package is removed.

Thus prior to removal of d-i i'd like to publish it three times, as empty uploads.

Such that when the package is removed it doesn't come-back, or like we can just keep it empty in the archive.

Blocked until https://code.launchpad.net/~xnox/debian-cd/cd-boot-images-amd64/+merge/386094 is deployed

It is a bad idea. Some users with old hardware will be disappointed. They have on CD-ROM drive, do not want to get Snaps in their systems.

Please bring netboot mini.iso back.

Is it possible to keep this package in universe because community wants to build netboot image their own. That means keeping all the dependencies as well. But they can just sync from debian.

Not really, no. Ubuntu d-i has significant improvements over the debian one, and it would be a regression reverting to debian version of udebs.

Also, d-i from universe does not really work, as it has to be always be build with a matching kernel ABI _and_ all of the userspace abi changes, _at the same time_, implying hard interlock on our kernel release cadence. As in, one has to rebuild d-i with every kernel upload and ensure they migrate in sync with any in-progress ABI changes in the release. It significantly hinders and deadlocks distribution development. Whenver things are missmatched, d-i simply fails to fetch/download/install udebs and fails with critical errors saying that either kernel modules are not available or it cannot install partman udebs rendering it useless.

Note d-i builds in groovy have been replaced with an empty stub page:

@Dimitri John Ledkov (xnox)

Please make mini.iso available again as it is presented for 20.04 LTS ( http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/focal/main/installer-amd64/current/legacy-images/netboot/mini.iso ).

For some devices it is only one possible method of installation. And of course the next 22.04 LTS should have minimal ISO available.

Which devices? Can you please list Vendor, Models, etc?

Every device with CD-only reader.

Also mini.iso is needed for clean system installation from scratch. This means that only user will decide package selection and availability of Snap subsystem. Forcing users to use new server installer may demonstrate limiting of their rights and freedoms.

So please make mini.iso available again for all new Ubuntu releases. Do not break user habits!

Still a problem, there is no mini.iso in http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/netboot/ .

Some users need PXE boot of legacy installer too - https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/installing-groovy-via-pxe-boot/18494 .

As per https://askubuntu.com/q/1291913/66509 users still expect to have mini.iso for 20.10 (groovy).

Please produce it!

I am using PXE boot for fully automated preseeded installations.

So, here is another vote for the mini.iso or netboot.tar.gz.

I now managed to get a working PXE setup for Groovy that runs the Subiquity installer with an autoinstall configuration.

I documented my findings in detail at https://askubuntu.com/q/1292032.

My solution can be used both for UEFI and BIOS systems and also mentions how to install a desktop system.

This is not only issue for PXE or CD-ROM restricted machine scenarios, ability to bootstrap net-installer by loading linux & initrd.gz in EFI shell is also gone with the change.

Please bring it back!
