Please, take this screenshot. I think that's Ubuntu bug. I don't see this
bug in Ubuntu 19.04 with same GNOME Shell.

Is this a problem upstream?

I don't think the title of this report is accurate. The is no "shrinking" involved. The bottom window previews in the overview are just clipped out of the screen, not shrinked.

Do you think the importance of this problem is just low? It affects a very central part of the desktop in a way that is not only ugly but also hinders usability. Hopefully it's not an upstream issue and will be auto-magically fixed by an update.

Here is a proper screenshot. The bug occurs whenever the windows become large enough or numerous enough, at which point they overflow past the bottom screen in the Activities Overview. They are clipped to where if you highlight them, you cannot see their window titles. I tested not having the dock installed and this problem did not appear, so it seems to be a bug in the extension.

In fact, I just installed the dash-to-dock extension, and if you turn off the 'panel mode' so that the dock does not extend all the way down, the problem goes away.

@vanvugt in case Robert is right, could you move this to dash-to-dock launchpad? Or do you prefer me to create a new issue (and maybe another one at https://github.com/micheleg/dash-to-dock/issues)?

I attempted to replicate this bug on Fedora 30 in a VM by installing dash-to-dock and enabling panel mode, but the previews do scale properly there. So strange...

In Ubuntu, you can easily replicate this bug by installing Ubuntu 19.10 in a VM and just launching Firefox, Files, and Rhythmbox. As the largest window, Firefox is put down to the bottom and clipped. At least on my system, disabling panel mode fixes the issue to where I can basically create infinite previews and see all the window titles, and re-enabling it triggers the clipping once again.

The thing is that dash-to-dock also adopts Ubuntu Dock settings, since that is what Ubuntu Dock is based on. So if I remove Ubuntu Dock, for example, but then install dash-to-dock, it actually starts in panel mode. (that is not a default) The fact that this bug does not seem to occur in Fedora 30 with dash-to-dock (v66) installed makes me believe it is some Ubuntu Dock specific thing, but I am just speculating atm.

Ok, I did not manage to figure this one out yet, but I did find something interesting. The windows actually scale differently depending on whether the panel is extended or not. You can just install dconf-editor and go to /org/gnome/shell/extensions/dash-to-dock and toggle extend-height in order to change this setting.

I caused the clipping to show up by just launching gedit and maximizing it before going to the overview. You can see from the attached screenshot that the only difference in the activities view is the panel on the right-side is not extended, and yet the gedit window on the left looks much larger, as though it was zoomed in. That is what is causing the clipping and why Fedora is unaffected even with the same extension. The scaling in Fedora is identical to the right-hand side of the image where the panel is not extended. There is some difference in how the windows are being drawn.

Another example: If I open two non-maximized gedit windows, in Fedora they will appear side by side. In Ubuntu? Top and bottom, with the bottom clipped.

I tried looking at a diff of the Ubuntu Dock code vs stock dash-to-dock, but I wasn't able to find any difference relating to size/scaling of the windows, so I'm not sure exactly what is causing it.

Still happening in beta, when installing and after installation. If I move the dock to the bottom it stops happening, no matter how many windows I open.

Just to be clear: I didn't mean to imply it is an Ubuntu dock bug, just that I was using that dock when it happened (btw it still happens). So I hope it wasn't moved here because of my answer alone.

I've tested this with latest 19.10 (updated today) using gnome-session and upstream dash-to-dock installed from gnome-software (can't remember the version now, but I installed it a few minutes ago). The problem is still there when the dock is vertically expanded to fit the screen. I've reported this upstream https://github.com/micheleg/dash-to-dock/issues/1007.

I confirm this is still happening after fully updating a few minutes ago. It's too close to the release and gives quite a bad impression, even if it doesn't affect usability in a crucial way I would say that importance isn't Low because of its visibility.

I can confirm that this is happening, and I don't think this should be counted as low priority. It's a clear case of Ubuntu having an issue which doesn't occur in any other GNOME based distributions. This is literally the only visible issue I have with 19.10, and it was one I only didn't report in 19.04 because I assumed it was so clearly visible that it would be fixed by 19.10.

Also I agree that giving it low priority is to mischaracterise it, the bug is not specific of Ubuntu, it's a bug somewhere in Gnome shell or in Dash-to-dock that manifests when the dock is vertically stretched, as it happens to be Ubuntu default configuration. But this also happens, for example, in Manjaro, which ships a dock similarly stretched by default.

I'm on 19.10, and the fix is not released yet. gnome-shell = 3.34.1-1ubuntu1

I've tested this in two up-to-date 19.10 installations running in very different laptops, one with hi-dpi, the other one an old standard dpi one, and both still show the issue. Both have the standard vertically expanded dock. It perplexes me as this issue status is "Fix released" since almost one month now.

The upstream bug report (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/1826) suggests this is not a gnome-shell bug. So to avoid confusing people with a spurious "Fix Released" I will just remove the task.

It looks like this issue is back in Ubuntu 21.04. On a fresh install on the same laptop I can see this issue on 21.04 but I cannot see it on 20.04.

The issue only occurs when the ubuntu dash extension is enabled. It also persists when I have disabled the ubuntu dash and enabled dash to dock.

I can see it with 3 nautilus windows opened simultaneously.

When plugged into a 2nd monitor with the monitors oriented top and bottom (and the top monitor being the primary), I can see the cut off elements extend into the bottom monitor.

I could replicate the issue on wayland and on xorg, and I could replicate the issue on a gnome-boxes VM too (on the live ISO).

A similar problem can be seen in 21.04 as a result of bug 1922353. To make sure you're not just seeing bug 1922353 check that you can still interact with the windows.

I can interact with the windows normally, the bottom of the windows just gets cut off sometimes.

The bottom reappears when I hover over the virtual desktops and the right side bar expands.
