Bug Description

In https://github.com/samba-team/samba/pull/64, support for Apple time-machine backup has been added. As AFP and other options are gone (I believe in favour of a CIFS implementation), is it possible that Ubuntu will merge these upstream patches in Samba packages for bionic or non LTS systems? It would be a real dealmaker for simple NAS-systems and such. Well, that would be my use case, but I'm sure more people would be glad.

Unlikely, and the next LTS just entered feature freeze mode, meaning it won't get samba 4.8. This is more likely to be in Ubuntu 18.10 and later.
