Not sure that's a problem with the driver.

X is running on display :0. If I kill X and run startx the desktop starts.

I also noticed that /etc/apt/sources.list is trashed with binary data from lightdm.

Ok, so maybe lightdm is starting too early?

bug 585853 shows a similar issue with xdm/wdm. Adding task for lightdm

If I start with --verbose on the command line, then selects 'Try Ubuntu', the live session boots correctly.
That confirms it is not a driver issue. Closing the corresponding task.

Thanks I believe I had this problem with the live CD today also with Intel graphics; I used nomodeset to be able to get the live environment to come up.

Confirmed on a Dell Mini 10v, so it seems pretty hw unspecific. I just get a black screen when lightdm starts. When I sudo stop lightdm and kill the X process, and "sudo start lightdm" it still does not work, so it's not a startup race.

When I do "startx" from a VT, it works fine.

This appears to be a ubiquity problem. It's crashing in ubiquity-dm due to gir problems. ubiquity-dm is trying to call GdkPixbuf.render_pixmap_and_mask but it isn't being found.

The X log error message doesn't seem to be relevant, as when I commented out the crashy bits in ubiquty-dm, X came up (and then metacity crashed, leading ubiquity to gracefully give up and autologin to a desktop).

This is bug 830061. I'll mark as a dup.

I'm reopening and removing the duplicate. I still experience the problem on an eeepc 1015PE.

Only 1 system shows this problem. I tried on another one which had the same issue and it boots fine with the same USB stick.

Hi. I have been testing 20110901 Beta 1 oneiric-desktop-i386.iso on Asus eee pc 1005P. (Atom N450)
I am not sure i have the same problem, i cannot locate the mentioned logs. -please advice.

When i boot live image from USB stick it gets stuck on the "Welcome" screen which is blank. Nothing shows in the window.
If i left shift boot and choose "try ubuntu" is boots into desktop.

The bug is consistent over two daily images and two usb sticks.

I can also confirm this behaviour on the ASUS EB1501P (ION2, atom D525)

Plymouth fails at boot with "plymouthd: ./plugin.c:540: map_to_device: Assertion `head->size > 0' failed."

I can start X by dropping to a VT and running sudo startx

If I can provide anything that will help, please let me know.
