Bug Description

[Impact]
The current totem-plugin-arte package found in Utopic and Trusty is unusable.
Because of changes Arte made to it's Website, the plugin is unable to extract any video URL. It is therefore useless.

Note that that Vivid can't be fixed. See LP: #1446775

[Test Case]
- Install the totem-plugin-arte package on Utopic or Trusty
- Launch totem, activate the Arte plugin
- The Arte video feed should appear on the side panel
- Double click on a video to play it

[Regression Potential]
I don't see any.
The patch is quite simple and was accepted upstream.
Beside, the current package is broken.

[Original description]

The plugin is activated but nothing displayed although .cache/totem/plugins/arteplus7 contents the previews.

Hi,

I am not able to reproduce your problem.
For me, the plugin works fine on both Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.10. I can browse the video list and watch them.

Please post a screenshot of what you are seeing and give me what is printed when you launch Totem via the command line.

Cheers,
Nicolas

Thanks for the reply Nicolas.
In the meantime I've managed it so far to display arte tv previews in the side pane. I had to click a few times on the entry Arte+7 under view and wait a bit until they load.

Double click on a preview results in error of url extraction. (screenshot)
Right click to open the link in browser results in wrong url [http://www.arte.tvhttp//www.arte.tv/guide/de/033948-000/360-geo-reportage?autoplay=1]. (screenshot)

Terminal outputs are a few of gtk, but only one time about arte:
~$ totem
(totem:10853): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkScrolledWindow 0x7f2a47909880 is mapped but visible child GtkScrollbar 0x7f2a478e6ef0 is not mapped
(totem:11530): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_window_get_toplevel: assertion 'GDK_IS_WINDOW (window)' failed

** (totem:10853): CRITICAL **: arteplus7.vala:401: Network problems: videos.arte.tv could not be accessed.

Thanks Sam.

Strangely enough, today the plugin is also broken for me: I got the same wrong URL as you. I don't know why it worked yesterday for me and not for you.
Arte made some changes on the website and it broke the plugin.

I proposed a patch upstream and I updated my PPA with new packages version:
https://launchpad.net/~malizor/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

Here, videos are now playing again. Let me know if it works for you.

Regarding your issue to display the video list, this is apparently a network issue. I have no such problem, so perhaps it's only on your side. Is the Arte website also slow for you? You may want to try from another Internet connection.

Cheers,
Nicolas

Hi Nicolas,
the ppa version works fine.
The video list is now instantly displayed after opening totem, maybe it was the cache, the computer wasn't in use for a while.
The Arte website is not slow, I'm able to watch movies flawless via firefox.

I assume it was correct to remove the totem-plugin-arte before installing it from the ppa.
When the patched totem-plugin-arte is back in Ubuntu repo I need to remove the one from ppa before installing it, right?

Changing the main task to Invalid as the plugin cannot work anymore starting from Ubuntu 15.04.
This is because Totem > 3.10 dropped the support for "traditional" plugins like totem-plugin-arte.
The package removal request is here: LP: #1446775

I'm going to propose a patched version for inclusion into Trusty and Utopic.

@Sam: the PPA contains the same package as in the repo, except the version is different.
Your system will automatically upgrade to the higher version available.
You don't need to worry about which version to use, just use one that works :-)

I'm going to provide patched version for inclusion into supported Ubuntu versions, but the process can take some time.

@sponsors: Here is a debdiff for Utopic.
It only adds a 6 lines patch to make the plugin usable again.

ACK on the debdiffs. They look good, and I confirm they fix the issue.

Uploaded packages for processing by the SRU team. Thanks!
