Bug Description

I made a fresh install of Ubuntu Ringtail and Upgraded to Saucy.

Turns out that the machine won't boot with linux-image-3.11.0-12-generic, but *will* boot with the old ringtail kernel
linux-image-3.8.0-31-generic!

I created two screenshots, one shows the point where the boot process with the Saucy kernel stops (after enabling the swap), and another picture of the boot process with the ringtail kernel AFTER successfully enabling the swap.

This bug report was generated on 3.8.0-31, since I can't get 3.11 to boot...

Falling back to linux-image-3.11.0-11-generic makes things work again.
So it's a change between -11 and -12...

Hm, looking at the changelog it's maybe due to the apparmor changes?
Don't have the calxedaxgmac at all, and the Upstream Kernel Change seems to refer to an apple trackpad.

3.11.0-11.17 was rebased to upstream 3.11.3, so it has all 3.11.3 changes. 3.11.0-12.18 is still based off of upstream 3.11.3, so the bug may have been introduced by a SAUCE patch between 3.11.0-11.17 and 3.11.0-12.18.

Can you first test the mainline 3.11.3 kernel to confirm the bug does not exist:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.11.3-saucy/

If the bug does not exist in upstream 3.11.3, we can bisect between 3.11.0-11.17 and 3.11.0-12.18 to find the commit that introduced this. As you already saw, there are only a few changes between these two Ubuntu versions, so a bisect should be fairly quick.

It's in mainline 3.11.3 as well. Turns out that 3.11.0-11.17 was ONLY
working since I forgot to install the -extras package which contains
the PCMCIA drivers.

So: 3.11.0-11.17 && 3.11.0-12.18 && mainline 3.11.3 ALL crash, at the
very same stage (when initializing the PCMCIA adapter)

As a quick test, I built a saucy test kernel with commit e39506b reverted. This test kernel can be downloaded from:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1237336/

Can you test this kernel and see if it still exhibits the bug? If it still has the bug, we can start a kernel bisect to identify the commit that introduced this regression.

This test kernel also requires installation of both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Hi! I upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 and have the same problem. I launch linux-image-3.11.0-12-generic in safe mode and it freezes by "pcmcia_socket: cs: I0 port probe excluding".
I have to boot with linux-image-3.8.0-31-generic
I am willing to help to solve the issue but I don't really know what to do next.

I hope @naphta can, since I don't have access to the machine in

My computer is 32 bits, may the test work if I install linux-image-3.11.0-12-generic_3.11.0-12.19~lp1237336v1_amd64.deb ?

The bisect indicated the following commit as the source of the regression:

commit ac212b6980d8d5eda705864fc5a8ecddc6d6eacc
Author: Rafael J. Wysocki <email address hidden>
Date: Fri May 3 00:26:22 2013 +0200

ACPI / processor: Use common hotplug infrastructure

This seems like a fairly big commit to easily revert, but I'll investigate it.

Just to confirm this isn't already fixed in mainline, could you test the v3.12 final kernel, which can be downloaded from:

@jnns, per your previous comments, it seems you may be hitting a different bug. Can you test the v3.11-rc1[0] kernel, as was also tested in comment #45. You should hit the bug in 3.11-rc1, but you mention in comment #70 that 3.11.0-11 boots fine.

If you don't hit the bug in v3.11-rc1, then you should open a new bug for your issue.

A quick summary for a Lenovo Thinkpad X230:

You can boot with the hw-detect/start_pcmcia=false boot parameter. This can be done by entering the letter 'e' at the GRUB menu, then adding hw-detect/start_pcmcia=false to the boot cmd line.

Another thing you can do is to edit the /etc/default/grub line and add that parameter to:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT

The line could then look like:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=" hw-detect/start_pcmcia=false"

After editing the /etc/default/grub file, you need to run: 'sudo update-grub' then reboot.

May be because it is a kernel from the previous release that is not in saucy ?

Hi,

I just want to say that I've hit that bug on much more older kernels than you guys...

After installing Linux Mint 13 Xfce (32bits) on a HP Pavilion ZV5000 [with TI PCI1620 PC card controller (rev 01)], I could only boot 1 of 5 times without a total freeze, needing a hard reset (neither Ctrl+Alt+Del nor MagicKeys are working in this case) !
And that with stock kernel 3.2.0-23 or it's update 3.2.0-58.
Even the live CD of PartedMagic only boots 3 of 5 times without freezes, with it's 3.5.6 kernel fom october 2012.

In both cases (LM13 + PartedMagic) , adding the boot option "modprobe.blacklist=yenta_socket" solves the issue all the time...

But also in both cases, modprobing yenta_socket once booted doesn't brings a lock up !
Just a lot of "memory probe / IO port probe: excluding nothing: probe failed"...
Hope this helps.
